Does anyone know about custody?

I don't know much about child custody, but I want to move out of the state my ex boyfriend (not husband) is in, and we have a kid together. I know every state is different (I currently live in Wyoming), and I'm not sure if I have the right to leave unless I have the custody issue settled. I really want to just take care of it outside of court, because I know my boyfriend probably wouldn't want to take it that far, so if we could come up with something ourselves, that would be much better. I'm currently applying for a place in the town I'm in to help me (for free) with legal advice, but it will be a little while before that happens. So I was just checking in to see if anyone had any experience in law on here or anything. Spare me the illiterate and all around unnecessary comments. I'd appreciate it if those of you who answer have experience in this sort of ordeal, or someone who has knowledge. Thanks.
