When I buy a PC USB joystick, will is be custom controlled to the actual controls of the game?

I'm planning to buy a PC USB joystick controller, (something alot like this one http://www.meritline.com/pc-usb-game-controller-pad-gamepad-joypad-joystick---p-60611.aspx?source=fghdac) will the controls have to be changed in the game to operate the game properly with the joystick? If you don't understand what I'm trying to say, please tell me. I will try my best to refine this question
