Did the asteroid belt formed when a planet exploded?

No. There is not enough material in the asteroid belt, eve if you stuck it all together, to make a decent sized planet, even one as small as Mercury. It's thought that the asteroids are a collection of small bodies which never got their act together to form a planet.
